Lyft to Host Appreciation Events at Albany Capital Center for Dignitaries, Drivers

ALBANY, N.Y.Lyft will host two appreciation events at the Albany Capital Center on Tuesday, August 8, to thank select elected officials, dignitaries and business owners who helped make ride-sharing a possibility in upstate New York, and then thank its new team of Capital Region drivers.  The nationally-renowned ride-sharing service began serving the Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Long Island markets on Friday, June 29.

“We are thrilled to operate in the Capital District, and grateful for all of the local support that Lyft has received since its launch. Lyft offers a safe, convenient option for residents of the Capital District and visitors to get around town, and provides drivers the opportunity to earn valuable income when it works for them,” said Funsho Owolabi, Public Policy Manager, Lyft. “This is just the beginning. With the continued help of officials, business owners, and more, Lyft will continue to grow, helping to stimulate the local economy, decrease congestion and improve road safety in Albany and across the region. Lyft is grateful to all who made ridesharing possible, and of course the locals and guests using our service. It has been a tremendous few weeks so far, and we’re excited about what comes next.”

“Ride-sharing has been a long time coming in upstate New York and was a personal priority of mine for two years. We’re pleased to have Lyft here as it’s certainly a big win and helps our area remain competitive,” said Assemblymember John T. McDonald III.

“We’re in a great location here in downtown Albany, and are thrilled to facilitate ride-sharing for our guests and Capital Region residents,” said Doug McClaine, general manager, Albany Capital Center. “These appreciation events will help get the word out further, and we’re proud to be a part of Lyft’s entry in to this incredible area.”

From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., dignitaries and elected officials will be invited to offer a few remarks, while interacting with drivers and Lyft personnel. Speakers include Albany mayor Kathy Sheehan, Senator George Amedore, Senator Neil Breslin, Assemblymember McDonald, Assemblymember Patricia Fahy, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and McClaine. Drivers will then be treated to dinner beginning at 6 p.m.

The ride-hailing app had previously been restricted to the New York City-area, until lawmakers voted this year to permit service expansion into upstate New York. On April 7, Governor Cuomo approved the 2018 state budget, which “authorizes Transportation Network Companies, such as Lyft, to operate across New York and creates uniform licensing standards.
